This spy thriller has faded in popularity over the years, but it still has the potential to work in new and different formats. Black Doves came out of nowhere with a huge ad campaign and became Netflix’s latest major production aimed at revitalizing the genre for the modern era. The result is a real mixed bag that holds your attention for eight pleasantly concise episodes but fails to mask the shortcomings of the storyline. Overall, it’s a fairly standard spy story, with some fairly standard tropes that anyone familiar with old spy antics will recognise and even fondly embrace. The biggest problem is the uneven tone. The script swings unevenly between a tongue-in-cheek action comedy and a dark, ponderous spy thriller that leaves you too distracted to really take it in. It makes up for this, however, with some stylish and effective action sequences in which Whishaw and Knightley make a convincing pair of mismatched professionals, with Lancashire providing strong support as the icy, detached M-type commander. The spy thriller remains a thriller with boundless possibilities, and Black Doves, despite its flaws, is a strong addition to the base game, with an interesting mystery at its heart, solid performances and action to match. ***
